Shingletown Gap is a heavily used area for both hiking and biking. But don't let that keep you away. Even though it is very popular it is still a beautiful place to take a nice stroll or a short hike.
Located in Rothrock State Forest, the trailhead for this hike is easily accessible from State College, only miles from downtown, along route PA45, by the town of Shingletown.
There are many trails in the Shingletown Gap area. These trails are used for hiking and also for mountain biking. Some of the trails will lead you up the mountain and connect to the Mid-State Trail. Trails in the Shingletown Gap area are blazed blue and blue and white.

Well, I woke up this morning with an urge to go hiking somewhere. I'm not sure where, but I read on some other website that if you want a good view of State College, you should hike Shingletown Gap and not Mt. Nittany. I decided I wanted a challenge, so I did the loop posted on 1/20/2006. The initial climb was very rough, but once I was on the ridge it was smooth sailing. When I came down the mountain on Sand Spring trail, I somehow ended up on a logging road of sorts. The blazes I was following were blue, and there were trees everywhere around the road blazed blue, so I followed the road. Eventually, through using my trusty cell phone and GPS, I made my way through the woods after the road ended and found the creek, successfully making my way back to the trail head. Other than this strange logging road, I loved the trail, great scenery and great views of the valleys.

My mother and I decided to take my sons (ages 9 and 14) on a walk through the woods while on our visit back to PA. Shingletown Gap is beautiful but not for the faint of heart! We started off on the blue trail, marveling at God' s creation. The Mountain Laurel was in bloom and the sounds of the stream were just what the doctor ordered. About one hour into our hike we decided that we were in a little over our heads. The trail kept going up and up and our energy was going down and down. We did get a laugh now and then at each other and the kids had a ball. This was not a casual walk but a true hike. If you have about 2-3 hours of time and a lot of energy then this is the place for you. We got several wonderful pictures that you can only get in PA! Enjoy!

My wife, 13-year old daughter and I only did about a two-hour hike (one hour in, one hour back) on the Shingletown Gap trail, but it was quite enjoyable and appropriate for our young hiker. We followed the blue blazes and the first mile or so is under a thick canopy where it was nice and cool on the hot, humid late-summer day that we took the hike. There is one short area that is very rocky, so much so that the mountain biker we encountered at this point had to dismount and carry his bike, but most of the rest of the trail was easy to traverse. We encountered about a half dozen mountain bikers during our two-hour Sunday afternoon hike, so Shingletown Gap is obviously a favorite place for them as well. We also encountered a lot of hikers who brought their dogs along, as the stream running along the trail allows the dogs to drink when they want, or occasionally to take a swim. We are looking forward to going back and exploring some of the other trails.

I hiked this trail last evening and it was a nice hike. A little muddy in places as it had rained late afternoon, but it was cool, which was a plus since the heat of mid-August was on full force. I hiked along the creek to the chimeny and then hiked to the top of the ridge overlooking Boalsburg. I believe the hike was just a little under 5 miles total. Next trip up to Shingletown Gap I'm going to hike up on the the other ridge and view the roman tower that I have heard so much about.
